7 Ways to Naturally Boost Sex Drive & Testosterone

By: Jessi Minneci

Let’s face it, as our biological clock ticks, our balls seem to get less and less useful. Seriously – sometimes it seems like our sex lives are nonexistent… am I right?! Unfortunately, the odds are stacked against us.

First of all, take age away, and research suggests that lack of libido affects as many as 32 percent of women and 15 percent of men. Low sex drive can actually strike at any point of your life for a variety of different reasons, including:

  • Depression/stress
  • Medication side effects
  • Relationship issues
  • Drug/alcohol use
  • Low testosterone
  • Being overweight
  • Too little exercise

Add age for us guys, and we could be talking about a recipe for disaster. For us, it’s quite normal to have a gradual sex drive decrease with age. Sure, each guy and his package are different, but most of us could expect to notice some differences into our 60s and 70s.

And whether you feel it’s your age, stress level, or diet that’s weighing you down, you’re probably reading this post because you could use some help in the, err, meat packing department. Luckily, there are a number of things you can do to naturally boost your libido and enhance your sex life.

Maintain a healthy diet

Body fat is an extreme libido/testosterone killer, and this may be because fat cells contain more aromatase, an enzyme that converts testosterone to estrogen. Yikes!

Unfortunately, weight gain and low testosterone accelerate one another, leading to a spiral of weight gain and hormone imbalance.

The good news? Reversing the spiral is mutually reinforcing as well. So swap out the McDonald’s once in a while for grilled chicken, brown rice, and veggies. It’s good for you, and good for your junk.

While you’re at it, eat these foods

You’ve probably heard of oysters and chocolate as aphrodisiacs. Let’s look at foods known to have similar benefits on sexual health.

  • Go high in iron: Low iron levels can have a negative effect on arousal and the ability to orgasm. Great sources of iron include dark leafy greens like kale and spinach
  • Channel the love: Figs, bananas and avocados are loaded with vitamins and minerals that can encourage increased blood flow to the genitals
  • “C” the difference: Vitamin C improves blood circulation. Find it in broccoli, oranges, and red peppers
  • Sweet potatoes: They’re loaded with potassium and vitamin A (hence why you’ll find wild yam in Seltzer’s). The potassium can help with high blood pressure, which makes a man more likely to have erectile dysfunction
  • Watermelon: A 2008 study by Texas A&M researchers suggested that watermelon may have a Viagra effect. The phytonutrients known as lycopene, beta-carotene and citrulline in the fruit help relax blood vessels.

Get Zen

Being stressed out will squash the sex drive of even the healthiest of men. Don’t knock it before you try it – take time to meditate, relax, and altogether zone out. Add essential oils like sandalwood, rose, jasmine and ylang ylang to a bath (or your deodorant!)– those scents have been shown to naturally increase the libido of both men and women.

If the above doesn’t sound like something you’re open to, then at the very least, consider taking up hiking, tai chi, yoga, or some other form of meditative exercise.

Skip the shots

In fact, you might want to consider skipping the hard alcohol altogether.

Studies she that even two glasses of wine could equal one too many. Drinking one glass of wine can put you at ease and increase your interest in becoming intimate. But too much alcohol can ruin your ability to perform by affecting erectile function. Too much alcohol can also inhibit your ability to orgasm.

Get a good night’s sleep

Working long hours? While running on just a few hours of sleep may sound “macho” to some, it’s a total sex drive and testosterone dud.  One recent study even showed that after only one week of just five hours of sleep each night, testosterone levels dropped 10-15 percent.

Get a tan

Vitamin D exposure increases total testosterone, bioavailable testosterone and free testosterone. Be sure to get your 15 minutes of direct sunshine daily – just remember to use sunscreen! If you live in a seasonal area where the sun isn’t always out, consider vitamin D supplements.

Turn to natural male enhancement supplements
